Site Maintenance

Just a quick announcement to let you know the social community may be down for a while this weekend for site maintenance.

We have been extremely busy and have several things to update on GoJasonville in the coming weeks. The internal pages, the calendar, the GoSocial Community, rewards, merchandise, and more. The website is being revamped with a new look, new content, and new features, and may take some time to complete but hopefully the end result will be something you enjoy.

If you have news, articles, events or any other submissions we encourage you to join and submit to this blog so that nothing gets overlooked while we are busy updating the website.

You will notice the new fresh look that GoJasonville will be undertaking by visiting the GoJasonville.com homepage. The internal pages will look similar, with the vintage-modern scrapbook design. Considering it took 10 days to design just the homepage, it may be a while before we have the additional 150 pages updated so be patient, as we also have some client websites to complete for paying customers, along with working a full time job. Sorry for the stale content in the meantime, but hopefully you will be pleased with the end result.

We hope you like the new look.

Piankeshaw Trails Presents School of the Native

With the arrival of Piankeshaw Trails to Shakamak State Park comes new activities including a program called School of the Native Journey Through Time which will take place April 26th and 27th at Shakamak State Park from 10:00am-4:00pm. The following was submitted by Sheryl Hartman of Piankeshaw Trails and explains the program and objectives.

School of the native will celebrate Woodland Indian Culture through Flute music, dances and drums which illustrate through movement and sound, how people view themselves and their surroundings. School of the Native is an event that will take visitors through some of the complex and often mysterious prehistoric cultures up through the colonial and settlement periods of the 18th and 19th centuries.

School of the Native attempts to revisit some of the past by utilizing live visual presentations of Woodland Indian life ways and the recreation of the various arts and in many instances inviting the visitors to join in.  This event honors Native Woodland People through arts and activities that engage the audience. The hosts of this event want the children and families of the community to leave the event with a much deeper understanding of cultural diversity and appreciation of those ancient ones who left their moccasin prints deeply imbedded on the face of mother earth.

The 2008 School of the Native will be highlighting such arts as coil wrapped pottery, stone tool manufacturing, storytelling, cordage making, and hide tanning, among many others. Most of these have been designated as, "lost arts" or "archaic arts," or even so called, "primitive arts." When you examine each of these and see how complex detailed knowledge goes into producing a finished product, "primitive" is not at all an appropriate definition for them.

The visitor to the park will see many differences between our modern world and these ancient cultures but that is only at the surface, if you look closely, there are more similarities than differences. The utilization of plants for food, medicine, clothing, and utilitaraian purposes such as clothing, twine, dye and house covers illustrates how much ancient people relied upon their environment. Some activities such as hide tanning and food preparation are practical skills that enhanced everyday life and have become art forms because the techniques used to produce a finished product were so complex and often involved skill building. Visitors will get a chance to walk into Native dwellings used for a variety of purposes. A session on Woodland Clothing will introduce the visitor to the multi task preparations needed to obtain plant fibers and animal hides and turn them into fine clothing and teach the visitor how quickly the Woodland People adapted to trade goods. Visitors will also be encouraged to try their hand at finger weaving and spear throwing.

We hope visitors to School of the Native will leave with a greater understanding of how the ancestors not only survived but thrived in their environment. Most 21st century citizens rely heavily upon others in society to provide the simplest of needs, going to the store to purchase food grown somewhere else. Everyone flips a switch to get lights and heat. The people of the northeastern cultures may not have had a button to push or a handle to turn, but what they did possess was a detailed working knowledge of their surroundings that helped them live with the environment, not conquer it. Piankeshaw presenters will show our visitors some of those ancient and complex life ways. Join us and become a sponsor for School of the Native at Shakamak State Park.

Thank you Sheryl Hartman for bringing your knowledge and skills to the area...

Join Piankeshaw Trails in their presentation of Journey Through Time "A Celebration of Native Woodland Indian Culture and Music" at Shakamak State Park April 26th and 27th from 10:00am-4:00pm.

Former Resident Ron Richards New CD

Ron Richards New CD Available

Many of you may remember a resident by the name of Ron Richards. Ron was a 1977 graduate from Shakamak High School and has since moved to Missouri in 1993.

Mr. Richards has been very busy compiling a cd of his own original arrangements along with some arrangements from songs from the 1970's and 1950's. These are instrumental fingerstyle guitar tunes. One of which he has called The Embury Road where he grew up in Jasonville. Ron says, "I had a lot of great memories growing up there and just wanted to share the tune." His inspiration for the cd was his family.

Mr Richards states, "I put the family photo on the back of the cd because they were my inspiration of all my Original Music on the cd. Although there isn't any singing with this, each song that I wrote has special meaning to me. There are also some tunes from the 50's and 70's on it. This an acoustic guitar solo album. I learned to play fingerstyle guitar by Derell Blake who still currently lives in Dugger, In. I met up with Derrell again a couple of years ago and we had a great reunion."

Congratulations goes out to former resident Richards' on the new cd.

You can check out Ron's website at http://www.RonWRichards.com where you can learn more about the inspirations for his music, upcoming shows, and reviews. The cd is featured on CDBaby for purchase and previewing. Click Here

Support Former Resident in Autism Research

A former Jasonville resident and good friend of mine needs our help. Many of you may remember Angie (Burris) Farrell, that smiling face that used to greet residents with her friendly personality at the Rexall Drug Store. Angie was also a member of the Shakamak Middle and High School Drill Team, a member of the National Honor Society, former Homecoming Queen among other accomplishments. She graduated in 1986 and worked at the Rexall Drug Store throughout high school. She received a degree from ISU and is working in a nursing home doing what she does best, helping others. Her son was diagnosed with Autism a few years ago and she will be participating in a walk a thon for Autism Research and is looking for donations. Here is the email I received along with a link to make donations and view their team page.

"I am participating in Walk Now for Autism to help find a cure for autism. Autism is the second most common developmental disorder in the United States affecting one in every 150 children born today. Despite some promising discoveries, the cause of autism is unknown and a cure does not exist. Research is crucial. Every 20 minutes another child is diagnosed with autism. Not only must we find ways to improve the quality of life for children and adults with autism, but we also must find a cure, and soon.

Walk Now for Autism is our chance to make a difference in the fight against autism by raising money for autism research and heightening public awareness. Please join me in my fight as I raise $500 to help fund essential research. I will be walking on September 20th and would like you to support those affected by autism. You can donate to Walk Now for Autism and join my team online through my webpage at www.walknowforautism.org. Donations can also be mailed to Autism Speaks using the donation form located on my page or send me a check made out to Autism Speaks. My team name is Trey and Logan's Walkers; please note this on your check and the donation form.

Please join me in my fight against autism. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of the more than 1 million Americans living with autism today."

You may donate to her team by visiting her husband Rob's Support Page. You can view their team page at Trey and Logan's Walkers Page. Please support Austism Research.

The Shakamak Laker Boys Baseball team wins the Indiana IHSAA State Championship. The Lakers win by a score of 6-2 against Cowan after their fifth trip in seven seasons to Victory Field in Indianapolis. Some highlights of the game as reported by http://www.IHSAASports.org are as follows:

Top 7 - T.J. Hill strikes out 10 and leads his team to a 6-2 victory over the Cowan Blackhawks in 1A Baseball State Finals! The team celebrates on the field in a HUGE pile inside 3rd base. Congratualtions to the Lakers of Shakamak High School!

Bottom 6 - Cowan pitcher Justin O'Connor pitches his way out of a couple of early walks to keep the Shakamak lead at 6-2. The 1 for Cowan an BIG 1, that kept the 5th going for Shakamak.

Bottom 5 - Justin O'Connor walks 3 and fills the bases with 2 out (Toomey for Cowan warming up in the bull pen). Pop fly dropped in short center field by the SS, 2 runs score on the error and we are again tied. The contingent from Shakamak all standing as their team makes a big move without any hits. O'Connor struggling on the mound (bull pen now empty), another walk loads the bases. A hit batsman bring Billy Newton home from 3rd, and Shakamak takes their first lead. A big hit to right scores three more for Shakamak, they now lead 6-2, still two outs but that is the first hit of the inning. O'Connor able to close the inning with a pitcher to pitcher duel and a strikeout. One hit and Shakamak scores six runs to break this game open. The lines now, Cowan 2-3-1, Shakamak 6-3-1.

Top 5 - The scoring begins in the 5th with big moves by the gentlemen from Cowan. Jacob O'Connor got to third on a outfielding error. Skyler Toomey scored from to get the first run. From there, O'Connor stole home for the second run. Big coaching move puts the Blackhawks 2-0. Lines through 4 aand 1/2, Cowan 2-3-0, Shakamak 0-2-1.

Bottom 4 (11:00am) - Justin O'Connor escapes the inning with a nice curve ball. A walk put a runner on base, but he didn't get too far on the base paths. Through 4, Cowan 0-3-0, Shakamak 0-2-0.

Top 4 - Half way through, Cowan gets another hit, but strands the runner on 1st. The Blackhawks return to the infield with a rather spotless record to this point. No scoring yet, but both pitchers making it hard to get much done at the plate.
